Michael dower is
the officer at peak national park describes how the national parks vide for
visitors who number more than 100 milluion a year... and for the economic and
social needs of residents. They have developed sophisticated means whereby the
purposes of conservation and recreation are pursued in close partnership with
the residents.
These mean include
advice and financial aid to farmers and landowners to encourage them to manage
land in a way that protects wildlife, landscape and historic values, advices
and financial aid to owners of historic buildings and other features, to
encourage their sound maintenance, full recognition, in the land use planing
process , of the social and econiomic needs of local people plus direct action
conservation policies of the protected areas, and regular and intensive
consultation and collaboration with organization who work with local people.
These measures suitably modified for local conditions could be relevant to many
protected areas whose management objective enable local population to
participate in such partnerships.
Experience of the
11 national parks in england and wales. Ten of these parks were created in
1950s under the national Parks and Access to the Countryside Act 1949. the
eleventh, the broads, gained equivalent status in 1989. Between them the 11 parks
cover a total area of 14,000 sq km = 1,400,000 ha, about 9 percent of the total
area of england and wales. Compared with some massive national parks of north
america and australia, these areas are relativelt small, but their special
character comes from the fact that england and wales have been continuosly
settled for many thousands of years b and are now densely populated.
The 11national
parks in england and wales fall within category V of the IUCN system.
Within the parks
live a total of about 250,000 (data 1995 by IUCN_International union for
conservation of nature and natural resorces...) about 0.5 percent of the
national total
