Michael dower is the officer at peak national park describes how the national parks vide for visitors who number more than 100 milluion a year... and for the economic and social needs of residents. They have developed sophisticated means whereby the purposes of conservation and recreation are pursued in close partnership with the residents.
These mean include advice and financial aid to farmers and landowners to encourage them to manage land in a way that protects wildlife, landscape and historic values, advices and financial aid to owners of historic buildings and other features, to encourage their sound maintenance, full recognition, in the land use planing process , of the social and econiomic needs of local people plus direct action conservation policies of the protected areas, and regular and intensive consultation and collaboration with organization who work with local people. These measures suitably modified for local conditions could be relevant to many protected areas whose management objective enable local population to participate in such partnerships.
Experience of the 11 national parks in england and wales. Ten of these parks were created in 1950s under the national Parks and Access to the Countryside Act 1949. the eleventh, the broads, gained equivalent status in 1989. Between them the 11 parks cover a total area of 14,000 sq km = 1,400,000 ha, about 9 percent of the total area of england and wales. Compared with some massive national parks of north america and australia, these areas are relativelt small, but their special character comes from the fact that england and wales have been continuosly settled for many thousands of years b and are now densely populated.
The 11national parks in england and wales fall within category V of the IUCN system.

Within the parks live a total of about 250,000 (data 1995 by IUCN_International union for conservation of nature and natural resorces...) about 0.5 percent of the national total
